How does Hypnosis Work?

For more information about hypnotherapy and some of our frequently asked questions...

What is Virtual Hypnosis?

Virtual hypnosis is just another way to receive hypnosis in the comfort of your own home. All you need for a session is a phone, headphones and somewhere to sit or lay where you will not be disturbed, during your session. These sessions usually take place via Skype, FaceTime or phone. We can talk for 30 minutes with the camera on as we introduce ourselves, then the camera is turned off as we begin the hypnosis session, and you pay attention only to my voice and my words.

Can I get stuck in Hypnosis?

No you cannot get stuck in hypnotic trance - Even if we were to lose phone signal during a session. You would likely become alert and we would re-book free of charge.

Is Hypnosis dangerous/ should i be afraid?

This is probably the most important question for many people and this question comes about because many people associate hypnosis with what they see on TV, or witnessed in stage shows. These are purely for entertainment and should not stop you from trying hypnosis as it really is a proven and effective form of therapy for many people.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis can most often be described as a altered state of mind. This is because the conscious mind has disassociated from the subconscious making the subconscious mind more heightened in its responses to positive suggestions, put forward by the hypnotherapist. Some have described hypnosis as a feeling of deep relaxation much like day dreaming. To give you an example of hypnosis I like to explain what Self hypnosis is. We self hypnotise ourselves many times during the day. This can happen when we are driving the vehicle, watching TV or even hanging out the washing. Hypnosis is such a wonderful and relaxing state and very natural and easy to attain.

What hypnosis is not!

Hypnosis is not about a therapist exerting power over their clients, it is not witchcraft, scary or something you should be afraid of.

What should I expect from Hypnotherapy?

As a clinical Hypnotherapist I am focused on your best interests, ensuring that I focus on your issues such as helping you to lose weight, quitting smoking, eliminating stress, dealing with phobias or managing and treating Insomnia- Hypnosis has been proven to be a very effective tool in managing these issues.

During your Hypnosis session, you can most commonly feel very deeply relaxed. Like day dreaming you will feel somewhat aware, but not at all bothered. Some have said it closely resembles that feeling when you are about to fall asleep. But it is not SLEEP!

You should expect to feel safe and relaxed. I always ask for feed back on my services and endeavour to give the best service possible.

Is online hypnosis as effective as a face to face session?

Yes it is. Most people enjoy the ease of having a session at home as they are more relaxed and feel safe.

What happens if I lose connection during an online session?

You can not get stuck in trance! If we were to lose connection you would simply come out of hypnosis and go about your day as usual. I would contact you once connection was sorted to arrange another time, free of charge. This generally doesn't happen.

Is Hypnotherapy mind control?

NO! Hypnotherapy is not mind control. This question generally comes about because people have seen a stage show where perhaps a shy person, displayed silly and out of the ordinary behaviour. I am a professional and have no inclination to exploit you in any way. Your mind will still belong to you when we are finished, and you will still have to say no to cigarettes :-) ...

Hypnosis has been around for centuries and has been seen as a gateway to changing false perceptions of ones abilities all with the power of their own subconscious mind. By planting suggestions to the mind to accept new behaviours and change old limiting thinking patterns and transforming these new positive suggestions into better behaviour - helping you make positive changes, in your life!

Can Hypnosis help me?

Hypnosis has been proven to help with many issues of psychological or physical manifestations (listed in the treatment section of this website). What I do suggest is that if the issue is something you are currently seeking medical advice for, please ask your GP or mental health practitioner for a written referral as hypnosis can work well as an allied treatment for many issues.

So how does it work?

Well it works in a similar way to guided meditation. The therapist guides the patient into a relaxed state of awareness for which the patient becomes very receptive to the suggestions used. For this to happen you will need a quiet place to relax along with a phone and headphones.

What does it feel like?

Most people say that it feels like you are daydreaming. You are there listening to the therapist but so relaxed, that you are almost just not bothered with it all. In rare cases I might have a client who reports back saying that they felt like their body was heavy, yet they felt as though they were floating in and out of consciousness... These experiences are quite personalised and very specific to your ability to relax and let go.
